Provence
This place is the symphony of colors: the blue of the sky, the sea and lavender, white stones and terracota houses with colored shutters. Millions of scents and tastes: lavender, olive oil, aioli, wines and anise liqueur. It is also the cheerful music of markets, the chirr of grasshoppers and singing of mistrals. The sea, the Alpes and the Rhone produce a wonder of contrasts, bathing in miraculous glow.
The most wonderful locality is the Camargue. It is divided into two parts - the Minore Camargue, a state-protected nature reserve with wild horses and bulls, cane and salt mines, and the Greater Camargue, a flat country with plenty of water, which is home to many agricultural holdings and vast private estates.
From Avignon, the Papal seat with its impressive Papal Palace, which is a grandiose sample of Gothic architecture and the Bridge of St. Benezette, the city best known today for its theatre, film and music festivals, through Arles, the ancient capital of Gauls with Preromanic theatres and arenas to Aix-en-Provence, a small university town, hiding below the Saint-Victoire mountain, and Marseilles, famous for its canebiere, bouillabaisse, anise liqueur and mistral.
No one knows for sure where the Cote d'Azur really begins, but judging by its summertime mood, it must begin in Saint Tropez, a small fishermen village that has become the vacation spot for the international Jet Set, and ends near the Italian border, way over Nice.
Saint Raphael, Cannes and its film festival, the Lerins Islands on the scene, Juan Les Pins, Antibes and the jazz festival that takes place in a pine forest, the ancient Italian city of Nice with its colored houses and the Principality of Monaco, ruled by the Grimaldis.
Let's not forget the inner part with its beautiful valleys, Verdon Gorge, the national parks of Ecrins, Mercantur, Mont Vantou and Esterel (amazing red rocks), the winding paths leading to fishermen villages that huddle on the steep shores, its mountains and ski-runs just several miles away from the sea. Take a trip to Grasse, the capital of perfumery that initially appeared as the city of glovers who began to aromatize gloves in accordance with the Italian fashion and thus determined the future destiny of the city.
